Over a decade in the making, a new version of IEC 61511, Functional Safety for the Process Industries is now available. 

While many consider the changes only clarifications of common interpretation, others consider the issues as significant.  Some of the key changes are:

  • More Formal Competency Requirements for Personnel
  • Stronger Functional Safety Assessment Requirements
  • Stronger Maintenance Assessments Requirements
  • New Cybersecurity Requirements
  • Simplified Hardware Fault Tolerance Requirements
  • Stronger Failure Rate Data Requirements
  • New Application Software Requirements

These issues will be presented with background information and some of the common interpretations.
