END USER MARKETS: NUCLEAR
The final part of the functional safety standard IEC 61508 was released in 2000. Although the ANSI/ISA 84.01 was released in the US in 1996, it had only limited impact since a relatively low percentage of end-users were accustomed with it and there were no strict laws enforcing the standard. IEC 61508, on the other hand is relatively well known.
This standard is being applied in a variety of industries, ranging from nuclear power generation to automotive manufacturers. In addition, the standard is also applied in many countries in Europe, Australia, Japan, and others. In addition, a process industry derivative standard was developed called IEC 61511.
From this, the ISA S84 committee developed ISA 84.00.01-2004, identical to IEC 61511 with the addition of a grandfather clause. Responding to this the nuclear industry derivative, IEC 61513 was also created.
