The modern paper mill uses large amounts of energy, water, and wood in a highly efficient and extremely complex series of processes, using modern and sophisticated controls technology to produce a sheet of paper that can be used in incredibly diverse ways.
The paper making process: from the Chip yard, the stock prep area, through the paper ma chung and finally through the finishing area, all require a sophisticated, complex and integrated control system not only to manage the papermaking process but to support the auxiliary processes like stream and electricity generation, water treatment and multiple chemical and support processes.
The critical nature of each of these sub-systems impact safety, environmental and economic operation KPI’s. Enough to justify the utilization of a robust and proven Front End Engineering control system design process like the Safety Life Cycle methodology as defined by IEC61508 and IEC61511.
