Oil and Gas production facilities consist of many diverse and complex processes that have special safety challenges that are similar to and also significantly different from those in chemical and petrochemical plants. These processes must run with the highest possible reliability under differing and difficult operating terrain that changes from permafrost to desert conditions to deep seas. Under these harsh conditions, continuous and safety operation is expected 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with negligible impact to the environment. The remote location of the facilities also creates special maintenance and operating challenges. Oil and Gas wells, whether onshore or offshore, operate at extremely high pressures, flows and temperatures, and the hazards and relating consequences due to operational or equipment problems can be catastrophic, leading to multiple loss of life substantial revenue losses, and major environmental incidents. New challenges are being created for those involved in the design of the facilities. The areas in which the facilities are being installed are becoming more remote. With increasing social and economic pressures, the legislation in various countries is becoming more stringent. These issues are addressed to a great extent by insuring that the safety instrumented systems are specified, designed, installed, operated and maintained as per appropriate and well recognized safety standards.
