Alarm Management to Improve Plant Safety & Minimize Risk

In a safety critical process, operator intervention and alarms are a first layer of protection for preventing a process upset from escalating into a more serious event. Optimizing the operator’s response to alarms can improve plant safety and minimize risk by reducing:

  • The Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) for the Operator response protection layer.
  • The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements for the system. The lower the SIL level, the less complicated and expensive the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) will be.
  • The demands on the SIS, which in turn reduces its chance of failure.
  • The proof test interval, which results in lower cost and less impact on plant operations.

As a leader in functional safety, we can help you take a holistic approach to the design of the safety system and the alarm system.  If you perform a layer of protection analysis (LOPA), we can help you determine the right level of credit to take for the operator response’s to alarm.  We can also help you take the design information generated from the safety lifecycle during HAZOPs or PHAs and ensure that it is used appropriately in the alarm system design process – ensuring consistency and minimizing cost.
