In the process industries, many safety instrumented functions operate in “low demand” mode where a dangerous condition exists very infrequently. In such situations, a “Proof Test” must often be done to detect certain failures in the equipment. Various types of proof test techniques are discussed along with tradeoffs in coverage and expense.
