exida Goes Back to School to Guest Lecture on Process Safety

  November 22, 2016

Todd Stauffer PSU

Todd Stauffer, a 1988 graduate of Penn State University, was back on campus as a guest lecturer for the course “Chemical Process Safety & Control” (ChE452). This course, first introduced approximately 10 years ago as an elective, is now mandatory for all students in the department of chemical engineering. This change in emphasis demonstrates how the US higher education system has recognized the importance of process safety in the training of the next generation of engineers.

The course provides an overview of Process Safety in the Chemical Industry, focusing on the nature of chemical plant accidents, their causes, and steps to eliminate them, including inherently safe designs. Assistant professor Dawn McFadden uses guest lecturers from industry to supplement the material taught in the class.
