9:00 - 10:00 am: Alarm Management - Operating Performance and Reliability
The purpose of an alarm is to draw the operator’s attention to an abnormal condition that requires their attention and a response to bring back the process to a normal and safe state. When used appropriately, alarms help the operator keep the process within normal operating conditions and maintain the safety of the process. When alarms are applied incorrectly, the results can be increased operator stress, product quality problems, unplanned downtime, damage to assets, personnel injury, or even catastrophic accidents. Most alarms have an operational purpose (e.g., keep plant production as planned), but some of them are focus on process safety, that means that their main goal is to maintain plant safety and protect people. A good alarm management system could help to achieve both goals.
