It is well understood that development cost and schedule can be reduced by finding design problems early in the development process. The Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) technique is a well proven and widely used technique for this purpose. When used in the early step of architecture design, a design weakness can be identified and often easily mitigated. The cost and schedule benefit comes when comparing that situation to finding the same design weakness later when much of the detail design must be discarded and redone. In embedded automation systems that need functional safety and/or cybersecurity certification, this step is even more valuable as the FMEA is also used as certification compliance evidence. The ARCHx tool was created to provide an intelligent structure for FMEA, Software HAZOP, and Cybersecurity Threat Analysis. The Knowledge Base in ARCHx goes beyond failure mode lists and HAZOP guide words to speed up the analysis and provide strong evidence for standards compliance. This webinar will review fundamental FMEA concepts and show how the ARCHx tool structures the FMEA process using an embedded automation system example.
