This book reviews and explains the application of the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 functional safety standards as they apply to final control elements. The overall safety lifecycle and reliability requirements are reviewed with special focus on the challenges encountered when dealing with complex electro-mechanical subsystems. Throughout the book requirements for designing and implementing reliable and effective safety instrumented functions are covered in a clear step by step manner.

The authors review the application of failure analysis as it applies to mechanical components that are utilized in final elements and discuss in detail sources of failure rate data. Various valve, actuator, and control technologies are reviewed along with their strengths and weaknesses when applied in safety applications. Example analysis’s and calculation reinforce the concepts covered in the book and questions at the end of each chapter help readers focus on key points. Appendixes cover the steps and provide sample documents necessary for certification to the IEC 61508 standard.
