What are safety engineering ethics?

The article What are safety engineering ethics? by exida’s principal partner Dr. William Goble was featured in the March edition of Hydrocarbon Processing.

In many professional engineer (PE) programs, continuing education is required. In some US states, this education includes specific requirements for engineering ethics training. The author recently attended a session on engineering ethics at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The session instructor described several situations, and then the audience discussed how an “ethical” engineer should respond. As in real life, the examples portrayed “gray” areas. The instructor read a statement from the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) board; the statement described NSPE’s viewpoint for the example. This session was a useful and an effective way to explore the true responsibilities and ethics of engineering.
