To help ensure 2020 gets off to a good start, exida is dedicating a week to Cybersecurity in Warwick, UK with open enrollment classes and a free seminar. 20 Jan: Automation Cybersecurity: Introduction to IEC 62443 This course provides an overview of the IEC 62443 standard and explains the fundamental…
Once again, we’ll go back to basics and run down everything you need to know to get started in functional safety. This webinar will focus on Systematic Capability, Architectural Constraints and the Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD).
We will look at:
Along with how each play an important role in SIF design and safety.
Failure data collection can seem tedious, time consuming and expensive. Just figuring out what data to collect can be challenging. Failure data analysis can be overwhelming with a sense of “I don’t even know where to begin.” So it is not surprising that these useful, vital activities are often neglected…

exida's VP of Global Business Development Steve Gandy spoke at a functional safety seminar in Siracusa, Italy last week. His speech was on the Functional Safety Lifecycle According to the IEC 61511 Standard. The event was organized by Tecsa, exida, and Vigili del Fuoco and covered a variety of topics…
PFDavg (the average Probability of Failure on Demand) is the probability that a system will fail dangerously, and not be able to perform its safety function when required. PFDavg can be determined as an average probability or maximum probability over a time period. IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 use PFDavg…
Velosi , a worldwide leader in Asset Integrity, HSE and Engineering Services has just received their API 580 and ASME 31.8s certifications through exida. exida, the global leader in functional safety, cybersecurity, and alarm management for the process industries was eager to work alongside of Velosi’s team in the recertification…
If you find yourself faced with this question you might be wondering why it is that having successfully used risk assessments without FMEDA your team are suddenly faced with the complexity of executing FMEDAs. Maybe us safety people answer with a follow up question to better understand and answer something…
I'm sure you are aware of the preliminary findings of the Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) Refinery explosion. If not, have a look at the video below. It is very interesting, but sad. I think we all can learn a lot from it. The PES refinery is one of the largest…
The alarm system and Human Machine Interface (HMI) are the main interfaces for process plant operators to monitor and control the process. This webinar will discuss HMI Design practices that can help improve the operator’s response to abnormal situations based on human factors considerations. It will discuss techniques for optimizing situation awareness before, during, and after an upset. It includes best practices in the configuration of process graphics and the alarm system taken from the ISA-18.2 and ISA-101 standards. It also references the work of Micah Endsley, the ASM Consortium, and the Center for Operator Performance.
exida will be teaming up with Vista Automacao to deliver our flagship CFSE prep course FSE 100 - IEC 61511: FUNCTIONAL SAFETY ANALYSIS, DESIGN, AND OPERATION in São Paulo, Brazil on January 20-23, 2020. Looking to become a CFSE or CFSP? This is the course you’ll need to pass the…

There are many ways to produce a software product. The traditional Information Technology (IT) way of creating a product was to incorporate the waterfall model, where rigid requirements were laid out before development began. Over the years, an agile process where flexibility is paramount has become the norm. One of…
A Control Hazard and Operability Study (CHAZOP) is a procedure for analyzing the safety and reliability of existing or planned Control and Computer systems. A CHAZOP can be performed to support the overall process hazard analysis or to determine the reliability of the control system. Additionally, the CHAZOP represents a key opportunity for aligning functional safety and cybersecurity objectives. By pairing the CHAZOP with a cybersecurity High-Level Risk Assessment (HLRA) the safety, reliability, and security of the control system can be evaluated o support strategic decision making. This webinar will provide a general overview of the CHAZOP and HLRA methodologies along with examples that demonstrate the various approaches that can be taken and the advantages of aligning the CHAZOP study with a HLRA.
I had the privilege to attend the CDS-forum in Trondheim, Norway on October 15, 2019. The CDS-forum is a Norwegian Industry Forum for Cybersecurity of Industrial Automation and Control Systems. The forum is a co-operation between oil companies, engineering oil companies, consultants, vendors and researchers, with a special interest in…
