Functional Safety Engineering for Complex Machines

Course Code: FSE 120

Course Description:

With the limitations in the IEC 62061 and ISO 13849 machine safety standards, there is a need to combine elements of those standards along with the overall IEC 61508 standard to best manage functional safety for complex machines such as in mining and materials handling applications.

Machine functional safety is particularly relevant to professionals who are responsible for validating the safety of machines that use complex systems such as PLCs for safety critical control. These standards are continually being developed, placing unfamiliar requirements on the task of assuring machine safety, especially when more complex equipment such as PLCs are used.

With technology also changing, effective competency training of individuals who are responsible for specifying, designing or otherwise applying technology to safety applications, is increasing in demand.

This course will walk participants through the various versions of the safety lifecycle, with a focus on developing a workable version for their application and the associated guidance and skills to best manage risk. Participants will also learn about how to identify and estimate risk, practicably reduce it with SIL rated safety functions, and much more.

The main objective of this course is to make, not only the complex equipment safer, but also to ensure the safety of your team and financial health of your organization.
