Recorded Webinars: Automatic Application Program Creation based on Conceptual Design Information

The requirements for the application program of a SIF/SIS’s a logic solver are defined by the conceptual design and Safety Requirements Specification (SRS) of the SIF/SIS. Converting these requirements can be time consuming and can be prone to errors due to misinterpretation of the requirements. When the conceptual design and SRS are available in electronic format, the application program for the logic solver can be automatically generated. Apart from time savings due to automatic conversion, an additional benefit is the ability to start the logic creation process later in the project schedule avoiding costly redesign activities. This webinar will review the possibilities of automatic application program creation and demonstrate some early results of a development project the exSILentia team is working on.

Blog Entry: Functional Safety Standards - IEC 61508 vs. IEC 61511

IEC 61508 is considered a basic or “umbrella” standard for functional safety. It is generic and sometimes even vague. IEC 61508 was intended that various industry sectors provide their own specific standards and guidelines as needed. Here we can see the relationship between 61508 and other standards, such as 61513…

Recorded Webinars: Issues with Mechanical Cycle Testing in Static Applications Involving Stiction

In an industrial setting such as a chemical plant, oil refinery or a deep sea oil rig, there are safety instrumented systems in place which are designed to promptly bring about a safe shutdown of a process if certain hazardous conditions are detected. Such safe shutdowns frequently involve isolating a process fluid flow, often accomplished by the use of an ESD (Emergency Shutdown) valve. If the ESD fails dangerously, when a hazardous condition necessitating a shutdown occurs and the ESD does not perform its function when required, the worst case consequences can be catastrophic. To insure a safe process, each individual part of the process is looked at in depth to analyze the failure rate and failure mode data for each component in a safety instrumented function as a safety lifestyle. This webinar will look at the cause and effects of parts on an ESD binding or sticking and what that might do to your process.

Blog Entry: So what does Interference-Free mean?  And why do we care?

An Interference-Free component, either as an interface or a defined functional area, is a system component that is neither safety critical (C3) nor safety relevant (C2), but interfaces with such subsystems. If a component has been shown to be interference free (C1), then it has been demonstrated that no failure…

Blog Entry: Getting Good Proof Test Coverage Numbers

Several years ago we recognized that proof test coverage was an important variable that must be considered when doing PFDavg calculations. We ran some models and discovered that the difference between “perfect” proof test coverage (100%) and a very good 90% could mean a whole SIL level in the result.…

Blog Entry: Nuisance Alarms and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”

The purpose of an alarm is pretty straightforward - to draw the operator’s attention to an abnormal situation that requires action in order to prevent an undesired consequence .
