It is important that a plant does not encounter spurious trips, therefore disrupting process and losing time and money. Even more important is preventing the occurrence of an accident that could result in a loss of a plant, damage to the environment, or even loss of life.
This webinar will discuss how calculating the spurious trip rate is important and what can be done with that number (saving time and money). It will also cover dangerous detected failures, and how those play a part in the Safe Failure Fraction calculation and how they are compared to spurious trips. How simple mechanical devices and/or final elements can still partake in SIL ratings by means of the 2H method of evaluation without adding additional safe failures will also be presented.
When I start working with new customers for IEC 61508 certification projects, it’s easy to understand why they might not have a compliant development process for functional safety: they’ve never done it before! They understand their market and their products, but they need help to understand the IEC 61508 standard…
When comparing competing products, it is expected to see different failure rates. However, when manufacturing companies compare internal failure rates between their different site locations, they are noticing different failure rates as well! Why is this? The difference in failure rates could be any range from 1.2X – 2X based on data received to date. Research has concluded that random failures can be divided in to two categories: product specific and site specific. The differences seem to be related to site variables that some have called “Safety Culture.” exida defines this variable as the “Site Safety Index (SSI).” This webinar will provide an overview of the impact of SSI on random failure rates, realistic PFDAVG calculations, and the impact of a good safety culture on lifecycle cost.
