Recorded Webinars: Applications of Site Safety Index™

As a result of several field failure studies, evidence is clear that failure rates for the same product vary from site to site. The ratio ranged from 2X to 4X based on product type. The differences seem to be related to site training, site procedures, and other variables that some have called “Safety Culture.” exida defines this variable as the “Site Safety Index (SSI).” SSI is a simple way to include an impact from what many people call “systematic failures” in SIL verification. This webinar will provide an overview of the impact of SSI on random failure rates, realistic PFDavg calculations, describe the safety impact of SSI, and share an actual product example.

News Item: What’s Your SSI (Site Safety Index) Level?

As a result of several field failure studies done by exida over many years, evidence is clear that failure rates for the same product vary from site to site. The ratio ranged from 2X to 4X based on product type. The differences seem to be related to site training, site…

News Item: EXIDA ANNOUNCES NEW TOOLS TO PREVENT ALARM FLOODS

exida is pleased to announce that its newly released SILAlarm™ V2.10 rationalization tool supports the design and automatic configuration of new DeltaV™ Alarm Suppression modules. These modules eliminate alarm floods by suppressing alarms from the operator when predefined conditions are met and help users comply with the ISA-18.2 and IEC…

Blog Entry: Is Your Team Ready for the Big Game?

How does a team get to play in the NCAA tournament? They don’t just buy plane tickets and arrive at the arena ready to play whoever else shows up. In fact, there is a rather rigorous process to determine who gets to play and what seed they are, which then…

Blog Entry: PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: SILAlarm V2.10 - Alarm Flood Suppression

The ISA-18.2 and IEC 62682 alarm management standards provide recommended targets for average alarm rate and for alarm floods - a condition during which the alarm rate is greater than the operator can effectively manage (e.g., more than 10 alarm per 10 mins) Ref ISA-18.2. During alarm floods the chance…

Recorded Webinars: Optimal Field Failure Data Collection

Operational data is collected for many processes in order to identify problems, improve production, and improve safety. To achieve the maximum benefits and lowest costs, it is important to understand what data should be collected. This web seminar describes important data items that should be recorded in process automation system operation, important rules for data classification, and methods for implementing field failure data collection. Systems from SAP compatible to single user are described. This web seminar is targeted toward maintenance engineers, control system designers, safety system designers, and process automation management.

Recorded Webinars: The Importance of Having a Good Safety Requirements Specification (SRS)

The SRS is the backbone for the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) and should define ALL the requirements for the SIS and its associated Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs). All too often the SRS is not followed due to poorly defined requirements, ambiguous or not easily understood functionality and missing or incomplete requirements. The result of which leads to poorly implemented SIS, and subsequent poor performance.

The webinar will highlight the importance of a having a good, accurate and comprehensible Safety Requirements Specification (SRS), including the need for proper maintenance and proof testing of the SIFs. The webinar will also examine some of the weaknesses and will suggest how to improve the SRS further.

Anyone involved in the design, operation and maintenance of SIS should attend this webinar.

Blog Entry: Claiming alarms as an independent protection layer (IPL)

An interesting question arose recently when creating an FSM plan: Does the ISA-18.2 standard on alarm management address the claiming of the operator’s response to alarms as a layer of protection? Not specifically, however the ISA-18.2 standard does require that alarms are rationalized, and that alarm system performance is measured…

Recorded Webinars: Design Considerations for Mechanical Safety Functions

Most safety functions include some mechanical components. These components can range from single devices such as pressure relief valves to more complicated subsystems such as hydraulic power units, and in some cases the entire safety function is accomplished through mechanical devices. Understanding the analysis and modeling techniques for mechanical devices is a prerequisite to designing and maintaining effective safety functions. This webinar will review common hazard analysis techniques and modelling techniques that can be applied to mechanical devices along with guidance on when to use which approach.
