Recorded Webinars: How exida is Changing the Functional Safety and IACS Cybersecurity Industry

In 20 short years exida was formed and became the #1 certifying body in the world. With exida’s growth continuing, and achieving another company growth record in 2018, people are asking: Who is exida? How and why did exida form? What makes exida different? Why are companies changing from other certifying bodies?

This webinar will share with you some of our personal stories on how we formed, the exida failure rate database, why exida publishes a plethora of reference material, and more.

Recorded Webinars: Process Safety: Why it’s important to consider more than one lifecycle

When it comes to process safety, most companies will focus on the functional safety lifecycle and compliance with IEC61511. However, with the advent of the industrial internet of things (IIOT) and the growing use of wireless technologies, it is becoming more important to consider cybersecurity and the consequences of control and safety systems being compromised due to a cyber-related incident. Similarly, if there is no defined alarm philosophy and rationalization of alarms, operators can miss vital alarms and lose valuable time in being able to respond to an incident due to the volume of alarms being generated. Accidents, such as the Buncefield and Texas City explosions, highlighted the problem with operators being confused by too many alarms.

Since the standards for functional safety (IEC61511), alarm management (IEC62682) and cybersecurity (IEC62443) all follow a similar 3 phase lifecycle, it makes sense to consider all 3 together, when it comes to process safety. As such an integrated lifecycle approach will help in reducing overall operational costs via increased efficiencies.

This webinar explores the overlap between the lifecycles and how synergistic benefits can be gained by considering all 3 together.

Blog Entry: When is an Alarm not an Alarm?

The ISA-18.2 and IEC 62682 standards define an alarm as an “audible and/or visible means of indicating to the operator an equipment malfunction, process deviation, or abnormal condition requiring a timely response”. One of the reasons why alarm systems are out of control (alarm overload, nuisance alarms) is because the…

Recorded Webinars: IEC 62443 and Agile / Scrum

This webinar gives a short overview of IEC 62443 and agile/Scrum and then shows one way to incorporate the requirements for IEC 62443-4-1/2 into an agile/Scrum process.

Training Course: Essential DFMEA

It is well known that a product development schedule and cost will be reduced if problems are found early in the development process. Techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) have been developed over several decades to achieve this goal. This course describes the essential elements of a…

Training Course: Cybersecurity Threat Analysis with ARCHx

An essential task that is part of cybersecurity development process is the Threat Analysis. The result of this work is used to define necessary defense mechanisms in an embedded device design. This course explains how to use the ARCHx tool to perform an embedded device or system threat analysis by…

Recorded Webinars: Integrated System Cybersecurity: Understanding and Applying IEC 62443-3-3

IEC 62443-3-3 System Security Requirements and Security Levels documents the seven foundational requirements for achieving robust system cybersecurity. These requirements can be applied to integrated industrial automation and control systems (either implemented in-house by an end-user or provided as an automation solution by a service provider). This webinar will cover the structure and key concepts from the standard, as well as introduce the process of IEC 62443-3-3 certification, and the benefits that system certification can provide to integration service providers and end-users.

Blog Entry: Back to Basics 11 – How is SIL Used by an End User?

IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 functional safety standards allow Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) to be used four ways by end users: To establish risk reduction requirements - How much risk needs/can be removed from the process to achieve a tolerable risk level? (For more info see Risk Reduction .) Probabilistic…

Recorded Webinars: Safety Lifecycle Overview with exSILentia (Part 2)

The Functional Safety Lifecycle as defined by IEC 61511 provides a method to analyze a process then design and implement a safety instrumented system to protect again high risk hazard scenarios. To perform each task effectively requires a good understanding of any analysis or design done beforehand. Part 2 of this webinar focuses on the design and implementation phase of the lifecycle. We will review SIL Verification, Cost Optimization, Design Safety Requirement Specification and more using the exSILentia Safety Lifecycle Suite.

Blog Entry: IEC62443 - Learning Cybersecurity (Prevention Techniques)

Last Saturday, I read an article about hackers who were behind at least two potentially fatal intrusions on oil and gas industrial facilities (Yes I read cyber articles on the weekend 😉). Besides the fact that I enjoy learning about cybersecurity on my days off, what I noticed is that…
